Tinchy the Spider Headlines at Drusillas’ Creepy Crawlies Weekend
On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July, Drusillas Park will host Creepy Crawlies Weekend and headlining at this year’s event will be Tinchy the Spider; the large stowaway huntsman rehomed to the zoo following an RSPCA rescue last November.
Named Tinchy by the staff who discovered her, the arachnid travelled from Taiwan to St Leonards On Sea in a shipping container of BMX parts. She was recovered by the RSPCA before being delivered to her new home at the award-winning zoo in Sussex. Her story will be featured in the new series of Animal SOS due to air this Monday (14 July) at 11am on BBC One.
Since her adventure, Tinchy has been looked after by Drusillas Park’s Spider Expert Angela Hale. Angela knows all there is to know about eight-legged creatures and is also the Secretary of the British Tarantula Society.
Angela commented: “Tinchy is doing really well and we are hoping she will have pride of place during Creepy Crawlies Weekend for everyone to see.”
Joining Tinchy over the two days will be a host of other mini monsters. The Discovery Centre will be open between 11am and 4pm, swarming with weird insects, slimy molluscs and scary spiders.
Amongst the critters will be hissing cockroaches that make a terrifying hissing noise to scare off predators, giant millipedes and large fanged tarantulas. Experts from the British Tarantula Society will be available to answer questions throughout the weekend, including Angela herself.
The British Tarantula Society will also return to Drusillas Park later in the year to host Drusillas Park’s first Spider Phobia Course on 28th September. For more information, please telephone 01323 874100 or click here for further information.
